BA GUA ZHANG INSTITUTE

The Ba Gua Zhang Institute joined Warrior Mountain Academy in February 2024. Ba Gua Zhang is a comprehensive traditional Kung Fu style encompasing a wide variety of fighting techniques combined with health-promoting practices and energy cultivation.

About Us

The art of Ba Gua Zhang (Bagua for short) is considered one of the three “classical” internal Chinese martial arts, along with Tai Chi Chuan and Hsing-I Chuan. Philosophically, it is rooted in Taoist concepts of spontaneous, natural action and constant change in relation to the actions of the opponent and the environment. In combat, it is characterized by evasive footwork, striking predominantly with the open palm, throws characterized by a rotational or spiraling energy, and joint locks (chin-na) which are used alone or in conjunction with other techniques. Among its many unique training methods is “walking the circle” which can be considered a form of walking meditation. Other training includes a variety of exercises to develop strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and coordination, as well as psychological attributes of calmness under pressure, focus, resilience, and persistence. For those interested, several traditional weapons (staff, broadsword, and straight sword) are also taught in this school.

In addition to its self-defense aspects, Bagua’s training methods emphasize exercising the joints in ways which promote joint health and function, and is an excellent practice for those wishing to rehabilitate their joints following trauma, surgery, or degenerative diseases like arthritis. The flexibility and improved balance and coordination achieved by logstanding Bagua practice will also enhance one’s ability to perform everyday activities and can increase performance in other physical activities and sports. Finally, the energy cultivation practices of Bagua allow the practitioner to perform even simple movements with fluidity, power, and relaxation.

Kevin Tong

Kevin Tong traces his martial arts journey from 1976 when, at the age of 16, he started to practice Wing Chun, Kali, and Jeet Kune Do under the instruction of a cousin who studied under the renowned Dan Inosanto in Torrance, California. Kevin went on to practice northern Praying Mantis for several years while living in Colorado Springs. He attended college in Denver, where he joined a Hsing-I school and was first introduced to Ba Gua Zhang. After graduating college, Kevin joined the US Air Force and was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California, where he was able to find his first Ba Gua Zhang instructor, Master Liang Chiang Ya, a well-known teacher and coach who came to the US from China. Under Master Liang, Kevin studied Fu style of Ba Gua Zhang, learning most of the empty hand forms. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Kevin moved back to Denver in 2000 and started studying Gao and Liang style Ba Gua Zhang under Bing Lee in 2001. In the last three years, Kevin has continued his study of Liang style Ba Gua Zhang under the private instruction of Tom Bisio in New York. Mr. Bisio has received extensive instruction in Ba Gua Zhang under four masters in China over the past 30 years.
